how to start conversation Thai

Some common phrases and questions you might hear when you meet someone for the first time in Thailand

One friend adviced me that it would be easier to learn a new language if you  skip the unnecessary   explanations about the grammar and  structures and just find an interesting topic along with more examples so i came up with some  phrases you might face during  a regular conversation :

What is your name ?                   Kun Chee a-rai? (คุณ ชื่อ อะไร ? )

How old are you ?                      Kun aa-yu tao-rai ? (คุณ อายุ เท่าไหร่?)

Where are you come from ?       Kun maa Jaak Nai ? (คุณ มา จาก ไหน ?)

What country are you from ?     Kun maa  jaak bratead a-rai ? (คุณ มา จาก ประเทศ
อะไร? )

where you live ( stay )  ?            Kun Pak Yu tii nai ?  (คุณ พัก อยู่ ที่ ไหน)

How to make a question in Thai

you can use some possibilities in order to make a question in Thai

using WH question words like what where who etc.

using question particles

In this post I'll speak about Q-particle and how to answer it.

You can change an statement to a question simply by adding MAI (ไหม) at the end :

  • do you eat food?          (kon) gin kaow mai?  ( (คุณ) กินข้าวไหม? )
YES:   gin( กิน )         NO:  *mai gin (ไม่กิน)

  • Will you go?                  (kon) ja bay mai?   ( (คุณ)จะไปไหม? )
YES:    bay (ไป)               NO:   *mai bay(ไม่ไป)

  • do you drink Coffee?     (kon)  deem coffee mai? ( (คุณ)ดื่ม กาแฟไหม? )
YES:  deem                NO: *mai deem (ไม่ดื่ม)

as you noticed when we want to make negative answer we use Mai  as well but if you hear them (just copy and past in google translate to listen ) or see them in Thai alphabets
then you will see the intonation and writing is not same

Here I tried  to explain it let me know if you find it helpful :)
